Hans Hesse (* before 1497, † after 1539) was a German panel and glass painter of the late Gothic and early Renaissance .

Live and act

Little is known about the life of the painter, who was probably born around 1470. Based on his painting style, it is assumed that he received his training in Nuremberg (close to the Wolgemut workshop ) or in the Nuremberg area. Research has not yet proven whether it comes from this area. Hesse's stay in Saxony can only be proven for the years from 1497 to 1539.

The first work that can definitely be attributed to Hans Hesse is a painted winged altar , completed in 1497 , which is now in the village church in Dittmannsdorf in the Erzgebirge district. In 1500 or 1501, Hesse settled in Zwickau in order to run a workshop there that can be traced back to around 1506. During this time he got to know the carver Peter Breuer , who also worked in Zwickau , with whom he executed the high altar of the Johanniskirche in Chemnitz , consecrated in 1505 .

Hesse probably moved to Annaberg in Alberta in 1506 , where a man named Hans Hesse was convicted of manslaughter that same year. It can no longer be clarified whether the painter is identical to the convict of the same name. It is only known that Hesse settled a short time later in the neighboring, Ernestine Buchholz , where he was safe from possible pursuits from Annaberg.

In Buchholz he achieved some prosperity by buying and selling houses. He became a respected citizen of this city who remained in demand as a painter and carried out numerous commissions in the following years, including the Wolfgang altar in Buchholz . His main work is the painting of the Annaberg mountain altar in St. Anne's Church , consecrated in 1521 , which he carried out in 1522/23. The informative depictions of miner's life in the Ore Mountains on the back of the reredos are particularly famous . After 1524 he worked mainly for Bohemian clients. For example, the Barbara altar in Želina (Seelau), the altar by Vintiřov (Winterritz, today in Radonice u Kadaně ) or the winged altar by Horní Mokropsy.

The last evidence of his activity (around 1530) can be found with a saint's wing in Teplice and the predella of the Švihovský family (today in the Prague National Gallery ). Hans Hesse was last mentioned in the files in 1539. Due to his advanced age for the time, it can be assumed that he died a little later.
