Hans Larwin (born December 6, 1873 in Vienna ; † November 17, 1938 there ; also Johann Larwin ) was a Viennese genre painter and academy professor.

Life

Hans Larwin, son of the fan-maker and bookbinder Johann Larwin and his wife Karoline, b. Veihinger, attended the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1889 , including under Christian Griepenkerl from 1891 , August Eisenmenger from 1893 and Casimir Pochwalski from 1894.

Around 1900 Larwin went on numerous study trips that took him to Rome , Munich , Paris and the Netherlands . In 1902 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus and had his first exhibitions there. He was also a member of the Old World Artists Association .

During the First World War , Larwin applied for admission as a war painter to the Austro-Hungarian war press headquarters . With the rank of first lieutenant , he was artistically active on various fronts from August 18, 1917 to November 1918. Some of his works from this period are now in the collections of the Army History Museum in Vienna.

After a stay in Chicago (1922-1924) Larwin lived between 1925 and 1927 in Slovakia , Hungary and Yugoslavia . In 1927 he returned to Vienna and in 1930 became professor and director of the general painting school at the Academy of Fine Arts and also taught at the graphic arts department .

Jenny Mautner (1856–1938) and her husband, the textile industrialist Isidor Mautner (1852–1930), who had owned the Marienthal textile factory since 1925, were among his supporters .

His honorary grave is located in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 12C, Row 1, Number 28).

  • 1953: Name of Larwingasse in the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt

Hans Larwin was best known as a genre painter of the Viennese suburbs and scenes from Viennese folk life, but also created portraits. His preferred techniques were oil and pastel painting, as well as drawing .
