Life

The son of a farmer attended schools in Habsburg and Brugg , then the Collège Latin in Neuchâtel . From 1859 to 1861 he studied at the forestry school of the Swiss Federal Polytechnic in Zurich . He continued his studies at the universities of Giessen and Berlin . After practical work in Germany and passing the exam, he received the patent for higher forest posts from the Aargau government council in 1866 . From 1867 he worked as an adjunct of the Oberforstamt, from 1868 as district forester and from 1872 as chief forester in Aargau . He wrote numerous forest science papers, in particular he dealt with the development of hailstorms. In addition, from 1882 to 1887 he was the editor of the specialist journal Der Praxis Forstwirt for Switzerland .

Riniker also embarked on a career in the Swiss Army : promoted to second lieutenant in 1865 , he was a first lieutenant member of the artillery staff during the border occupation of 1870/71 . From 1875 he was a captain of the general staff, from 1882 to 1888 he was chief of staff of the 4th division. Finally, as a Colonel Brigadier , he commanded the 11th Infantry Brigade.

In 1875 the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau elected Riniker to the government council, but he refused the election. Three years later, on the occasion of the parliamentary elections in 1878, he was elected to the National Council in the Aargau-Mitte constituency. In parliament he then joined the democratic group . In the years 1884/85 he was involved as a constitutional councilor in the drafting of a new Aargau canton constitution, where he campaigned for the promotion and support of the agricultural cooperatives. When the Grand Council re-elected him to the government council in 1887, Riniker accepted this position and then headed the finance department. A special concern for him was the switch from patent hunting to hunting for territory . He was a member of the board of directors of Aargauer Bank, and headed the cantonal government as Landammann in 1890/91. At the federal level, he also appeared as a member of various appraisal commissions in railway expropriation proceedings and the school council.
