Hans Schatzmann (born January 24, 1849 in Windisch ; † July 11, 1923 in Bern ; resident in Windisch) was a Swiss judge and lawyer . From 1910 to 1918 he was Federal Chancellor .

Schatzmann graduated from the district school in Brugg and the canton school in Aarau . He then studied law at the universities of Zurich , Heidelberg , Munich and Berlin . After he was admitted to the bar in 1871, he ran a law firm, first in Brugg and later in Lenzburg . In 1874 the cantonal government appointed him clerk in Aarau, where he took over the presidium of the district court a year later.

In 1879 Schatzmann joined the Federal Chancellery as head of the office and secretary . The Federal Council elected him Vice Chancellor in 1881. He had to represent Federal Chancellor Gottlieb Ringier several times during long periods of absence from illness and health resorts. After almost three decades in office, Schatzmann finally succeeded Ringier in 1909. In 1914 he completed a comprehensive reorganization of the federal administration; In addition, he campaigned for the Federal Gazette to be published in Italian. He resigned in late 1918 and died of a stroke five years later.
