Hans Wegener (librarian)

Hans Wegener (born May 27, 1896 in St. Avold , Lothringen , † December 27, 1980 in Bremen ) was a German librarian .

Life

Family and education

The Evangelical baptized, native Lorraine Hans Wegener, son of the forester Gustav Wegener and his Wife Caroline was born carpenter, turned after graduation at the Melanchthon School Steinatal , followed by participation in the First World War , the study of art history , philosophy and economics at at the universities of Strasbourg , Münster and Heidelberg as well as at the TH and the School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart . In 1924 he acquired the academic degree of Dr. phil. In 1929 he passed his library examination in Berlin .

Hans Wegener married Dorothee nee von Mengersen in 1924. From this marriage came the children Thomas and Cornelia. Wegener died in December 1980 five months before he would turn 85 in Bremen.

Professional background

Immediately after completing his doctorate at the Prussian State Library in Berlin, Hans Wegener joined the library service, and in 1942 he moved to Metz as head of the academic libraries . From 1942 to 1945 he was in charge of the Amerikahaus in Erlangen , in 1951 he was appointed director of the State Library in Bremen, and in 1961 he was officially retired.

Hans Wegener dealt in particular with the history of manuscripts , illuminated manuscripts and the history of book illustration .
