One grandfather was the chemist Justus von Liebig , his father the agricultural scientist Hermann von Liebig and a half-brother of the government councilor Eugen von Liebig . He came from the baronial house of the old Liebig family .

Hans von Liebig received his doctorate from phil. and taught as a private lecturer in chemistry at the University of Giessen , where he completed his habilitation in chemistry around 1908.

Liebig was a member of the Pan-German Association and until July 1919 edited the Munich monthly magazine Deutschlands Erneuerung , published by JF Lehmann , in which he also wrote under his pseudonym Dr. Walter Liek published monthly "Political Considerations".

In the Pan-German Association, Liebig was excluded from nomination to the committee for "Jewish questions" in autumn 1918 by Konstantin von Gebsattel because of a note in Semi-Gotha . In the anti-Semitic, denunciating reference work Semi-Gotha , Hans von Liebig was identified in 1914 as the great-grandson of a Jewish woman who converted in the 18th century. In 1919 he was therefore excluded from the Pan-German Association.

Liebig, who was not a civil servant, left university in 1921.

According to Kuno von Westarp , Liebig was "one of those politicians who were inclined to attribute everything they had to criticize solely to their dependence on Jews". Liebig warned against a " Swissization " of the German people.

Liebig is one of the rare commentators on the völkisch camp who noticed early on (1922) a similarity between Italian fascism and German National Socialism :

“One looks with envy to Italy, in whose local elections in May the clericals and socialists, along with communists, who previously had half the vote, melted down to a third, and a new one that permeates the entire population from workers to high nobility Party, the fascists, were able to achieve a decisive role right away. What is new about the party, which in many ways corresponds to our National Socialism Munich School, consists merely in placing the fatherland and nationality in the foreground in all questions. "

Most of Liebig's writings were placed on the list of literature to be sorted out after the end of the Second World War in the Soviet occupation zone and the GDR .
