Hans von Reutlingen (also Hans von Aich, * around 1465 in Aachen , † after 1547 in Aachen) was a German goldsmith of the Middle Ages .

Live and act

Hans von Reutlingen, also called Hans von Aich , worked in Aachen for over 40 years. His maker's mark consists of the first letters of his name: Johannes von Reutlingen, JR, arranged in a cross shape. Although Aachen was one of the goldsmiths' centers in the Middle Ages, no work of art in the soft style of the 15th century has survived. Only the apostles - Antependium of Aachen Cathedral Treasury can resonate tradition.

How it came about that Hans von Reutlingen gained supraregional importance is not traditional. His seal and coin work goes through the styles of the late Gothic and early Renaissance .

His main work is characterized by architectural elements used in mannerist style . At the height of his artistic work, Hans von Reutlingen "juggled" with arcades and canopies at a time when Mannerism had not yet developed as a style. In this way he gave lightness to the heavy gold material .

Aachen's most famous goldsmith died at the age of 80. His grave is unknown. His oeuvre comprises 75% profane and 25% sacred works.
