from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hanswilhelm Haefs (born November 11, 1935 in Berlin ; † February 24, 2015 in St. Vith ) was a German publicist , translator and researcher .

Life

Hanswilhelm Haefs is the older brother of Gisbert Haefs and Gabriele Haefs and a cousin of the Germanist Wilhelm Haefs. In 1945 his mother fled with him to Wachtendonk , from where he went to the Thomaeum grammar school in Kempen until 1953 . Then the family moved to Bad Godesberg, where he attended the Aloisius College until he graduated from high school. Between 1955 and 1958 he studied Slavic Studies , General and Applied Linguistics , Ethnology and Comparative Religious Studies in Bonn, Zagreb and Madrid .

In 1958 Haefs joined the editorial team of Siegler-Verlag in Königswinter , where he worked as an editor until 1964 , and from 1964 to 1980 as editor-in-chief for the weekly documentation from the Politics and Economy Archive of the Present , as well as for the magazines Weltgeschehen and Europaforum . He oversaw the documentation of the German question and the documentation on disarmament and security until it was completed in 1983.

From 1958 the editions 3 to 12 of Political, Economic, Military Associations and Pacts of the World appeared , with each edition of Haefs being completely revised and considerably expanded. From 1961 to 1964 he compiled the chronicle of the previous year annually , which was then discontinued and replaced by the quarterly world events - documentary reports for teaching and study published from 1964 to 1979 . He also published regularly in the world forum .

From 1980 Haefs lived as a freelance journalist and translator. From 1980 to 1985 he published the Fischer World Almanac. Numerous trips took him to almost all European countries west of the Soviet Union; Canada and the USA with Mexico; Israel, the Arab Gulf States, India, China. He published hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, for example in Sprachforum - Journal for Applied Linguistics , Inner Colonization , Forward , The Parliament . In 1975 he was invited to join the German China Society based on his China reports in the Contemporary Archives . There he published articles about reports in the Chinese daily press and from Chinese magazines and publications. In 1984 he became a member of the Karl May Society , in which he also published numerous articles.

The handbook of useless knowledge , which appeared in 5 volumes, of which volume 1 has already reached 18 editions, then emerged from countless readings from around 30 years . In 1945 Haefs began to collect place names as "baptismal certificates of the places", and in 1948 also their interpretations as "translations of the oldest reports about the founders and founding times, founding rights and founding purposes". The preoccupation with place names and their interpretation in terms of a settlement and settlement history led on the one hand to the handbook of German-language place names within the borders of the Old Kingdom from around 1300 , and on the other hand to a series of volumes with the place names of the region, as well as a series of ethnological studies .

Hanswilhelm Haefs lived in Atzerath in the German-speaking part of Belgium.

Criticism of the translation work

Haefs translated all of Gilbert Keith Chesterton's Father Brown stories .

The unexpectedly great success of Haefs' German translation of the novel Lemprière's Dictionary by Lawrence Norfolk prompted eleven translators to send an open letter to Knaus Verlag in December 1992, stating that Haef's ignorance of both the English and German languages and the publisher were fraudulent accused the audience. Numerous reviewers dealt with the so-called "translator dispute" in various periodicals .

Haef's other translations (e.g. the Chesterton transmissions of the Father Brown stories ) were not objected to.
