Harold Gregory "Hal" Moore (born February 13, 1922 in Bardstown , Kentucky , † February 10, 2017 in Auburn , Alabama ) was an American officer, most recently with the rank of lieutenant general in the US Army . His deployment in Vietnam was the subject of the 2002 war film We Were Heroes , in which he was played by Mel Gibson .

Life

Military career

Born in Bardstown, Kentucky , demographic restrictions meant he had little chance of getting a place at the United States Military Academy . So Moore moved to Washington, DC , finished high school and then attended George Washington University for two years before receiving a recommendation for West Point from a Georgia congressman in 1942 (although he had never been to Georgia). He graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1945 , where he was made a lieutenant . He then attended George Washington and Harvard Universities for postgraduate studies, which he completed with a degree in "International Relations".

As Lieutenant Colonel, Moore commanded 1st Battalion , 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment , 3rd Brigade , 1st U.S. Cavalry Division in the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley November 14-16, 1965 during the Vietnam War .

In 1977 the officer was retired. Moore was the first of his West Point class (1945) to be promoted to Brigadier General , Major General and Lieutenant General. After retiring from active service, Moore became vice president of Crested Butte Ski Resort in Colorado.

Hal Moore died three days before his 95th birthday in Auburn, Alabama.

He was married to Julia Compton Moore (1929-2004) and had five children with her.

We Were Soldiers Once ... And Young (co-author: Joseph L. Galloway) which under the title "We Were Soldiers" (Eng. Title: We were heroes ) in Fort Hunter Liggett in Lockwood, California and Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia was filmed. He was played by Mel Gibson .
