Hal John Norman , actually Harold L. Norman, Sr. (born August 27, 1911 in Wichita , Kansas , † July 14, 2011 in Andover , Kansas) was an American actor , presenter and radio play speaker . Norman starred in numerous supporting roles in westerns and television series such as Bonanza , West of Santa Fe , A Thousand Miles of Dust , Wagon Train , High Chaparral and Lassie . He received because of his frequent depiction of Indians the nickname "Chief" ( Chief ).

Life

Hal John Norman grew up in Kansas and learned early the riding of horses . In 1930 he lost his right leg in a train accident, but recovered and learned to walk with a prosthesis without any noticeable limp. In the 1930s he was an announcer and presenter on a radio station in Wichita and in the late 1930s he played in radio plays on the radio stations KFH and KFBI in Wichita.

From 1957 he began his career as a film actor in the Hollywood film industry , using the stage name Hal Jon Norman until his last film in 1990. He played in particular in western films and series and portrayed characters such as Buffalo Bill , Frost in West of Santa Fé (1960), Kimki in Island of the Blue Dolphins (1964) and a Koso chief in High Chaparral (1968) During his thirty-year acting career, he played alongside Clint Eastwood , Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine , although he was versatile due to his numerous accents such as German , Swedish , French , Italian , Spanish and several American dialects, but always only supporting roles played.

Norman, nicknamed because of its frequent depiction of Indians and chiefs "Chief" Gotta last met in 1990 as a grandfather in Deadly greed of Harvey Keith alongside Katherine Barrese and Malcolm McDowell on.

Hal John Norman died on July 14, 2011 in Andover, Kansas, at the age of 99.
