Harry Helenius

Harry Gustaf Helenius (born June 22, 1946 in Oulu , † March 14, 2019 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish diplomat .

Life

Helenius was born into a Finnish-Swedish family. In 1965 he graduated from Nya Svenska Läroverket in Helsinki. He studied philosophy at the University of Helsinki and entered the Finnish diplomatic service in 1973. From 1974 to 1975 he worked as an attaché at the Finnish consulate in Rouen , France . He then returned to Finland and worked as an attaché in the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1976. This was followed by a deployment as an attaché at the Finnish embassy in Moscow in the Soviet Union until 1978 . From 1978 to 1981 he worked as second secretary at the Finnish embassy in Madrid in Spain until he returned to Finland as first secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1983 he took on the role of Secretary General of the Committee for Scientific and Technical Cooperation between Finland and the Soviet Union in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1986 to 1988 he served as Counselor at the CSCE -Folgekonferenz in Vienna operates. In 1988 he was sent to the Embassy in Moscow as Minister-Counselor for Trade and Economics. In 1991 he became head of the Russia , Central and Eastern Europe Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1995 he went to the Finnish Embassy in Stockholm in Sweden as an envoy .

In 1998 he became the Finnish Consul General in Russia in St. Petersburg . From 2001 to 2003 he was head of the subdivision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Eastern Europe and 2003 to 2004 head of the eastern department. From 2004 to 2008 he was the Finnish ambassador to Moscow in Russia. From June 1, 2008 he became ambassador to Germany . From 2011 to 2014 he worked as an ambassador in Sweden.

In addition to his native Swedish , he also spoke Finnish , German , English , Russian and Spanish .

He was married and had two children.
