administration

Hartford was originally divided between two Parishs. The greater part of the place belonged to Witton Chapel in the parish of Great Budworth and a smaller part was accounted for by the parish of Weaverham cum Milton. It formed part of the Eddisbury Hundred and was incorporated into the Poow Law Union Northwich in 1836 . In 1866 the Civil Parish was constituted.

The Civil Parish boundaries have been changed three times. In 1894 the area between Beach Road and Darwin Street including the train station to Northwich was incorporated. In 1936 some minor border adjustments were made and in 1955 Greenbank was transferred to Northwich.

From 1894 to 1974 all of Hartford was part of the Northwich Rural District and was administered by the Borough Vale Royal Council. The latter ceased to exist in April 2009 and Hartford is now a Civil Parish within Cheshire West and Chester .

church

St. John the Baptist Church, Hartford

Hartford Church dates back to 1821 when residents managed to raise enough money to build a church. Most of the village belonged to Witton Chapel Parish, two miles away, and a small part south of Chester Road formed a separate part of the Weaverham parish .

Construction began in 1822 and in 1824 the church was consecrated as a chapel to St Helen Witton by the Bishop of Chester . The cost of construction was approximately £ 1,450 .

The population growth in Hartford over the next four decades meant that the church became too small, so that in 1873 construction of St John the Baptist's Church began . The design comes from John Douglas and in 1875 the new church was consecrated.

The steeple was built in 1887 to commemorate Victoria's golden jubilee . In 1897, six bells were installed to mark her diamond jubilee. In 1998 the church received a new entrance and an extension.

Hartford also has a Methodist Church; this is on Beech Road. The building was constructed in 1891 and replaced a structure built nearby in 1833.
