Hartwig I. (Bavaria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hartwig I. (first documented in 953; † June 16, 985 ) was 953–980 messenger of violence in the Carinthian Kroatengau and 977–985 Count Palatine of Bavaria .

origin

Hartwig is generally assigned to the Aribon clan and is closely related to it; According to H. Dopsch, however, he comes from the family of the Hartwig-Engelbert group in Salzburggau . His great-uncle was the Salzburg Vogt Hartwig († 925/930), a proximus (very close relative) of Archbishop Odalbert . (This ancestor Hartwig is also the reason that Count Palatine Hartwig I is sometimes also counted as Hartwig II.)

Life

In 953 Hartwig appears as the holder of a ministry (official area) in Carinthia; the Krappfeld is in his district; Here and also in the western Grazer Feld and in the Laßnitztal , Hartwig had huge allodies. Around 960 Hartwig is mentioned as Count in Isengau , 963 in Lower Salzburggau ; 965 is reported from his Central Carinthian county and from his office as Walpoto . Hartwig is also considered the new founder of Michaelbeuern (977). From 976/977 - 976 Carinthia became independent as a duchy, but Hartwig also remained Carinthian messenger of violence - until his death around 985 he was Count Palatine of Bavaria. He could to his son this office I. Aribo pass. He was also a count in the Freising area and bailiff of Archbishop Friedrich I of Salzburg.
