Kroatengau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kroatengau ( pagus Chrovvati or Crowati ) was a district in the Duchy of Bavaria or Duchy of Carinthia in the 10th and 11th centuries.

geography

The Kroatengau was probably only in the area on the upper Glan around St. Veit and Leoben in today's Styria. There were also settlements of chrobats in Krappfeld , Zollfeld and beyond Villach and beyond the Drau .

In the north, the Kroatengau was bounded by the County of Friesach (Gau Gurcatal), in the east by the Gau Lavanttal , in the southeast it met the County of Jauntal (Gau Junotal), in the south by the Karantanengau and in the west by the Lurngau .

The place names could indicate chrobats

history

The Croats were a kind of warrior caste on the borders of the Avar Empire and also gave their name to today's Croatian people . The origin of the name is not entirely clear, but it seems to be of non-Slavic origin. The pagus Chrouuati appears in the written sources for the first time in the middle of the 10th century as an administrative district in the Duchy of Bavaria . The administrator was called Walpot and had special powers. In 976 he was assigned to the newly formed Duchy of Carinthia .
