Hasan Beyzâde

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hasan Beyzâde Ahmed Pascha , called: Hamdi († 1636/37 in Istanbul ), was an Ottoman chronicler and civil servant.

Life

Hasan had his nickname Beyzâde as a reference to his father re'isülküttab ("Foreign Minister") Küçük Hasan Bey. The place and date of his birth are unknown. He received his training in a medrese ("college"), then he entered the service of the Sultan's Council at the time of Foreign Minister Dal Mehmed Efendi († 1597/98) around 1590.

He took part in the "Long War" under various generals. During the Eger campaign by Mehmed III. he was courier ( teslimati ) and secretary ( tezkireci ) to the Grand Vizier Damat İbrahim Pascha († 1601). After participating in the Varad ( Nagyvarad ) campaign in the wake of Satırcı Mehmed Pasha († 1598/99) Hasan returned to Istanbul and returned to the service of Damat İbrahim Pasha. In 1599 he accompanied him on the Uyvar ( Nové Zámky / Neuhäusl) expedition as deputy secretary, later as chief secretary ( baştezkireti ). He held this rank on the train to Qanije ( Nagykanizsa ) in 1600. He was then appointed Deputy Foreign Minister ( re'isülküttab vekaleti ). Again he was chief secretary in 1602 at the reconquest of Istolni-Belgrade ( Székesfehérvár ), as well as at the siege of Peste ( Pest ) in the same year.

The Grand Vizier Yavuz 'Ali Pascha († 1604) dismissed him from his offices, but he remained secretary of the deputy of Yavuz, Ahmed Pascha († 1613). After his reinstatement, he became deputy head of the income tax office ( defter-i haqani emini ) and head of the land property office ( defter emini ) in 1604 . Hasan worked from 1605 as the director of the financial administration in the Anatolian provinces, in Tuna , Karaman and Haleb ( Aleppo ), later as governor general of Karaman and Kefe in the Crimea ( Feodosiya ). During the campaigns in Erdel ( Transylvania ) and Eflak ( Wallachia ) he was again there as a secretary in the army and was then again governor in Kefe. On his return from the Crimea, he took part in the defense of Varna against the Cossacks . He was then again head of the financial administration in Karaman, Haleb and Tuna. During the campaign against the Poles and Cossacks in Bogdan ( Principality of Moldova ), he was in charge of controlling the army's state expenditure.

In the period of office from 1621 to 1625 of the Minister of Finance ( başdefterdar ) Baqi Pasha († 1626/27) Hasan was without a public office. It was only in the Revan ( Yerevan ) campaign of Sultan Murad IV in 1635 that he again took part in an unknown position. Shortly after his return, Hasan Beyzâde died in Istanbul, the year of death is given as 1636/37; he was buried in the Gümüşsuryu cemetery in Beyoğlu, which no longer exists today .

Works

  • Ta'rih ("Chronicle")
This work has survived in six versions written by Hasan Beyzâde, which were created between 1623 and 1635. The first is without an introduction, in the second he introduces the concept of the chronicle, in the other versions the people who influenced this edition are named. All six versions are divided into sections in which Hasan uses older chronicles as a basis and in those in which he reports what he has experienced and observed himself. The enumeration of the acts of charity of some sultans and the résumés of princes, viziers and spiritual dignitaries take up a broad field.
  • Uṣūl al-ḥikam fī niẓām al-ʿālam
A translation of the title is not yet available in the German-language literature. Hasan Beyzâde wrote this political treatise ( siyasetname ) for the Grand Vizier of Sultan Osman II , Güzelce 'Ali Pascha († 1621 ). It is an abridged edition of two older works. Hasan starts with an autobiography in 27 verses. This introduction is followed by four chapters and a summary of the two underlying books "Ravzu'l-ahyar by Muhyiddin Mehmed b. Hasib Kasım and the Arabic model Rabi 'al-abrar by Zamashari.
  • Mecmu'a ("Collection, Compendium")
This is a collection of Hasan Beyzâde's writings and poems, e. B. three copies of the report on the campaign to Qanije (1600), as well as twenty copies of letters and some fatwas (legal opinion). This collection was privately owned, but after the death of the owner it was no longer mentioned when the Yapı ve Kredi Bankasi (“Construction and Credit Bank”) established the inheritance . A scientific processing is therefore currently not possible. The collection is only named and described in detail in two articles by the original owner Cavit Baysun about Hasan Beyzâde and his father Küçük Hasan Bey.
