Hassoum Ceesay (* 1971 in Panchang ) is a Gambian historian , writer and museum curator at the National Museum of The Gambia . He is one of the most prolific Gambian historians.

Life

Ceesay attended Panchang Primary School from 1977, Armitage High School from 1983 and then Gambia College from 1989 to 1991 with the completion of the Higher Teacher's Certificate. In 1995 he attended Fourah Bay College (now part of the University of Sierra Leone ). He then went to the Canadian Saint Mary's University in the capital of Nova Scotia Halifax , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1999 .

He was the features editor of The Daily Observer in Banjul and an editorial writer from 1999 to 2006. From 1999 to 2008 he was curator of the National Museum of The Gambia and curated numerous art and ethnographic exhibitions.

In 2003 he received a postgraduate diploma in museum studies from the University of Nairobi , Kenya. From January 2008 to August 2008, he was Deputy Secretary of State and Director of President Jammeh's Press Office . In 2009 he earned a Master of Arts in African History from the University of Gambia . In 2010 he was the lead researcher on a UNESCO study on cultural rights in the Gambia. He was director of the Gambia copyright office. Hassoum is currently (as of 2020) Director General of the National Center for Arts and Culture (NCAC) and is responsible for founding the Copyright Collecting Society of The Gambia . From 2014 to 2017 he was a member of the Government Council of the University of Gambia.

Some of his publications deal with women's history in the Gambia. Ceesay is a familiar face on Gambian television where he speaks frequently on topics and issues of history.
