The main ditch is the northwestern source river of the Erlenbach , a tributary of the Anlauter , near Bergen in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen .

The main ditch rises at a height of 541  m above sea level. NN on the southwestern edge of Bergen on a plateau of the Weißenburger Alb , a mountain range of the Franconian Alb . It flows steadily in a south-easterly direction and takes on several small, unnamed streams. The main ditch flows after a run of about 2.8 kilometers at an altitude of 520  m above sea level. NN southwest of Thalmannsfeld and near Syburg Castle with the Augraben .
