The House of Youth was built in 1949–1951 on the initiative of the Hanoverian youth associations by the city of Hanover at Maschstrasse 22–24. Support came from the British occupation forces, a large donation from public funds from the United States and the active help of young people from Hanover. The facility was created in order to offer the former “bunker youth” a meeting point and a cultural site. The house should also be a place for the democratic re-education of the youth and a lead towards a united Europe . The foundation laid Federal President Theodor Heuss on 30 October 1949 of keeping the meaning of the house as Germany's first cultural building for the post-war youth emphasized. At the inauguration of the house on November 10, 1951, the then Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Hinrich Wilhelm Kopf, stated: "... the most diverse youth organizations come together under his roof to experience democracy " .

The Hanover State Theater , founded in 1952, gave its performances in the Haus der Jugend from 1952 until the move in 1958 to the Theater am Aegi .

Between 2007 and 2008, the house was redesigned with extensive renovation and conversion work without changing the external appearance of a typical 1950s building. In particular, acoustic and technical requirements were brought up to date, and all rooms were barrier-free . The current head of the house is the city youth worker.
