Haydn Quartet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Haydn Quartet , headquartered in Esterhazy Castle in the Burgenland capital Eisenstadt , ties in with the tradition of Esterházy's musical culture with the aim of reinterpreting the works of Joseph Haydn and those of his contemporaries from a contemporary perspective. Furthermore, it has set itself the task of performing lesser-known works. It relies on intensive collaboration with prominent musicians, which is documented by numerous CD productions.

Concerts in almost all European countries, appearances in the USA (Carnegie Hall, New York ), the CIS countries , the PR China, Japan and Mexico, but also a large number of radio, television and recordings have made the Haydn Quartet internationally known made. It is also a regular guest at the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt .

The quartet consists of the Austrian musicians Fritz Kircher (first violin ), Martin Kocsis (second violin), the German violist Gerswind Olthoff and the English cellist Nikolai New. The quartet chose their headquarters because Joseph Haydn lived and composed in Eisenstadt for over 30 years.

In March 2005 the quartet performed a benefit concert for the victims of the tsunami in Bangkok in the presence of the Thai Princess Galyani Vadhana .

In “Haydn Year 2009” , the quartet honored its namesake with a very unusual concert series in Vienna. All 69 string quartets by Haydn were performed in the parish church of St. Michael .

A Far East tour took the quartet to the People's Republic of China in January 2010, where it performed at the National Center For Performing Arts in Beijing and the Tianjin Concert Hall in Tientsin on the state visit of the Austrian Federal President .
