The Heartland virus (HRTV) is an enveloped RNA virus , of the proposed species Heartland banyangvirus . Together with the species Huaiyangshan banyangvirus (SFTS virus, Bhanja virus) it is placed in the newly established genus Banyangvirus of the family Pehuiviridae from the order Bunyavirales . According to a previous alternative proposal, the Heartland virus is located together with the SFTS virus in a common species ' Tick-borne phlebovirus ' in the genus Phlebovirus of the same family Phenuiviridae .

Heartland virus is a tick- borne arbovirus .

properties

Heartland virus was first discovered and described in northwest Missouri by Scott Folk at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Missouri. The symptoms observed in two farmers in June 2009 were fever , fatigue , diarrhea and a lack of white blood cells ( leukopenia ) and platelets ( thrombopenia ). First, Ehrlichia chaffeensis suspected as a symptom polluters, treatment with doxycycline but not struck and Ehrlichia could not be detected. The search for a virus was then successful.

A study by the CDC of 56,000 ticks collected on site found 10 copies of the virus. The Chinese discovered SFTS virus (SFTS for English severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome ) from the same family Phenuiviridae in the order of the Bunya causes a similar disease.
