Heathen Foray (English attack of the heathen ) was founded in autumn 2005 in Graz , in Styria , Austria . The style of music can best be described as Viking Metal with Melodic Death Metal influences. The lyrics are mostly about ( pagan ) battles and warriors.

Band history

The band was founded in 2005 by Jürgen Brüder and Daniel Koinegg. After a short time, C. Michael Hofbauer joined the band as a drummer. At the beginning of 2006, a bassist was found in Markus Engert, who also provided the band with a rehearsal room.

About half a year after the band was founded, in May 2006, guitarist Daniel Koinegg left the band and was replaced by Safet Pehlic. Around the same time Robert Schroll joined the band, who completed the line-up with his vocals.

After their first appearance in Deutschlandsberg , Safet Pehlic left the band and was replaced by Zhuan. In 2007 the Demo Forest was recorded in the rock studios in Leoben .

At the beginning of 2008 Markus Engert left the band and was replaced by Markus Wildinger. In the spring of 2008 Heathen Foray played a concert on the Paganfest tour in Graz as the opening act for Ensiferum , Moonsorrow , Korpiklaani , Týr and Eluveitie . Her album The Passage , recorded in rock studios, was released in 2009 by the German label Black Bards Entertainment. Heathen Foray was named “Best Austrian Newcomer 2009” by folkmetal.at . In 2009 Heathen Foray went on two tours in Germany. After the album was released, Hofbauer quit for professional reasons. Franz Löchinger replaced him in 2010 as session drummer and later became a full member.

In 2010 the album Armored Bards was released through Black Bards Entertainment. In the fall of 2010, the band went on a European tour together with Black Messiah , Adorned Brood , Nomans Land and Negură Bunget .

In 2011, the band's founder Jürgen Brüder and the drummer Franz Löchinger Heathen Foray, who only joined the band in 2010, left for professional reasons. The farewell concert took place on October 29, 2011 in Lafnitz . In autumn 2011, Alex Wildinger, who had been helping out with the band as a live guitarist since 2009, joined. Markus “Puma” Kügerl joined Heathen Foray in spring 2012.

In September 2013, Heathen Foray released their third studio album Inner Force and presented it on the “Mid European Pagan Siege Tour” through Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.

In 2014 the band was at the "Barther Metal Open Air" and, as in 2010, at the Kaltenbach Open Air .

At the beginning of 2015, Heathen Foray signed with the German label Massacre Records . On April 24th, the fourth album Into Battle was released , which like its predecessors was produced in the rock studios. At the beginning of April 2015 the band embarked on a headlining tour through Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria. In June 2015, Heathen Foray reached second place on the Japanese import album charts.

In 2016, Andreas Kienleitner was introduced as the new guitarist in place of Zhuan.

For 2017, Heathen Foray took a break from live to work more on new songs.

In the winter of 2018, the band's founder, Jürgen Brüder, joined the band again and replaced Andreas Kienleitner.

In February 2019 the band embarked on a short tour through Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic.

style

Heathen Foray's musical goal from the start has been to "make music that is melodic, catchy, yet heavy". Flutes and other folk-metal- typical instruments and keyboards are deliberately avoided. The guitars play the dominant role in all the songs. These are characterized by many solos and demanding playing techniques such as sweeping . The band is compared with Wolfchant and Turisas, among others .

Thematically, the band's lyrics are partly inspired by the Nordic-Germanic sagas and myths . But there are also topics such as a person's inner personality struggle (in the case of a cloudburst ) or the cyclical alternation of light and dark (in the case of winter king ). Most of the songs are in English ; but there are also some Germans .
