Heidelberg is a city in the municipality of Hessequa in the Garden Route district , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It has 8,259 inhabitants (as of 2011).
Heidelberg lies on the Duivenhoks River , immediately after it emerges from the Langeberg . It is located directly on the South African national road N2 and at the western end of the South African " Garden Route ", a much-visited tourist region. The Worcester – Voorbaai railway runs through the city .
The area was explored in 1689 by the explorer Izaak Schryver. In 1725 a bure named Andries Gous founded a farm called Doornboom ("thorn tree") here. In 1855 the church council of the district of Riversdal , in which the area was located at that time, purchased a piece of land from the farm and founded the town with the construction of a church and a school, which because of its similar topographical location and with reference to the Heidelberg Catechism according to the German city of Heidelberg was named.
Nearby tourist destinations include the Bontebok National Park and the Grootvaderbosch Nature Reserve .
