Old hospital in Schlanders

The old Heilig-Geist-Spital in Schlanders is an original, so-called infirmary . It is built on the north side of the hospital church of the Holy Trinity and is in the immediate vicinity of today's hospital in Schlanders.

history

The exact date of construction is not known, but it was first mentioned in the 13th century. For the year 1461 an associated house with courtyard and garden is mentioned. Originally located on the Schlandraunbach and the old country road, it was later converted into a hospital as part of a foundation , which was available as a hostel for destitute pilgrims . In addition, nursing was established later, and the care of beneficiaries was added.

A hospital foreman and his nurse were in charge. A hospital chaplain had been available for pastoral care since 1651 . A separate “Baumann” took care of the hospital's agriculture . The supervisory authority was the parish of Schlanders, the maintenance was ensured by donations of all kinds from all social classes in the surrounding area. In 1837 the “Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul” from Zams took over the duties of the hospital caretaker.

Since 1981 the tasks of the “Old Hospital” have been taken over by the “St. Nikolaus von der Flüe Citizens' Home”, which was newly built in the immediate vicinity.

The old hospital now houses part of the administration and the archive of the Silandro hospital.

Building

The original L-shaped complex with the main building, auxiliary buildings and the hospital widum was dismantled in the late 20th century, so that only the rectangular core building remained. This was transformed into a modern hospital for the time. As for all buildings in the immediate vicinity, the Schladraunbach also posed a threat to the hospital. This is clearly visible in the basement, the vaulted rooms of which are for the most part no longer accessible due to mud deposits . (Two of the rooms were exposed in 1944). The sacristy of the hospital church and several vaulted and paneled rooms, one of which is known as the “armory”, are located on the first floor above . Access to all rooms, including those on the upper floor, is via a vaulted corridor.

The top floor was not added until the middle of the 18th century, with which a roof line with the hospital church was reached.

On October 24, 1980 the building was listed as a historical monument.
