Parish Church of the Holy Cross in Stein am Kocher

The parish church Heilig Kreuz is a church built from 1881 to 1884 in the neo-Gothic style in Stein am Kocher , a district of Neuenstadt am Kocher in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg .

history

The predecessor building of the church on the Schlossberg above the village was the castle chapel of the earlier Burg zum Stein , originally from the 11th century , which was renewed in 1501 by Philipp von Weinsberg and in 1725 by von Dalberg and in 1835 came into the possession of the community. Stein am Kocher was a branch parish of Kochertürn until 1778 , before the parish became an independent parish and the church became a parish church . Today's church building was built from 1881 to 1884 according to plans by Ludwig Maier in the neo-Gothic style and extensively renovated from 1987 to 1994.

Look at the choir

The retracted choir with a three-eighth end adjoins the five-bay nave to the east . The church tower is located on the southwest corner . With a massive transept in the middle of the nave , the church, like many Holy Cross churches, has an approximately cruciform floor plan. The main portal is located in the southern transverse gable, while the northern transverse gable houses a side chapel with a Pietà . The gable ends of the transept are each provided with large rose windows, the light of which falls through galleries into the interior of the church. In the west there is a stone gallery with a wooden parapet, supported by two columns connected by round arches , on which the organ is located. The choir and nave are spanned by a flat painted wooden ceiling, the design of the wooden ceiling corresponds to the other wooden furnishings (stalls, doors, gallery parapets).

The furnishings of the church are comparatively small and simple. There is no high altar, just a celebration altar with a matching ambo and sacrament house in the choir. A roughly life-size crucifix is suspended above it , under the pointed arched triumphal arch with an inscription . To the left of the choir passage is a simple Marian altar, to the right of it is the baptismal font . In the choir and nave there are still several mostly smaller figures and stations of the cross. A figure of the Madonna, a figure of Joseph and the font from 1755 still come from the previous building.
