Heinrich Boie (born May 4, 1794 in Meldorf , Schleswig-Holstein , † September 4, 1827 in Buitenzorg , today Bogor , Indonesia ) was a German zoologist .

Live and act

Boie, a son of the writer Heinrich Christian Boie (1744–1806), first began to study law in Kiel and Göttingen . Inspired by the lectures of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in Göttingen and later by Friedrich Tiedemann in Heidelberg , he switched to biology. In 1821 Coenraad Jacob Temminck appointed him as a curator at the Naturalis Natural History Museum in Leiden .

Shortly after taking office, Boie began to write a herpetology of Java , relying on collectibles from Carl Reinwardt (1773-1854), Heinrich Kuhl and Johan Coenraad van Hasselt (1797-1823), all members of the Natural History Commission of the Dutch East Indies could support.

After Kuhl's death, Boie was chosen to replace him on Java. There Boie died of the tropical disease malaria .

Boie had already completed his “Herpetology” before his departure, but had not published it. It was published in extracts in 1826 by his successor Hermann Schlegel . Schlegel also published Boie's letters in which he had described new species . Heinrich's brother Friedrich Boie also made sure that some articles appeared after his death.

Dedication names

Salomon Müller dedicated the name of the island honey eater ( Myzomela boiei ) to him in 1843 and Viverra Boiei a synonym for the ribbon roller . By Christian Ludwig Brehm named 1824 Art Lestris boji , now a synonym for the Arctic Skua ( Stercorarius parasiticus ( Linnaeus , 1758)), was dedicated to him and his brother Friedrich. Picus boiei Wagler , 1827, also named in his honor, is now considered a synonym for the white- mantled woodpecker ( Campephilus leucopogon ( Valenciennes , 1826)). Even if there is no express dedication in the original description, Carl Ludwig Doleschall honored in 1859 in the spider species Heteropoda boiei from Java .
