Johann Georg Heinrich Ofen (born July 6, 1768 in Durlach , † July 10, 1830 in Darmstadt ) was a German clarinetist , flutist , harpist and composer .

Life

Oven came from a Nuremberg cardmaker and musician family. His father Johann Matthäus Ofen (1739-after 1800) was a member of the margrave of Baden's chapel and map maker, his mother Regina a singer. His teachers were Georg Wilhelm Gruber (composition) and, as an instrumental teacher, H. Birckmann, who also taught Backofen's younger brothers. From 1780 oven lived in Nuremberg and studied music, drawing , painting and languages. He works as a portrait painter and writer and learned several foreign languages. He traveled to Würzburg to perfect his game here with Philipp Meißner (1748–1816). From 1789 he began long art journeys, which led him as a clarinetist through France , Italy and Spain , where his language skills helped him.

In 1794 he accepted the position of a flautist in Nuremberg, and from 1798 onwards he was again active as a traveling virtuoso. In 1802 Ofen moved to Gotha , where he found employment as a ducal chamber musician under Louis Spohr in 1806 . He became the harp teacher of Dorette Spohr (nee Scheidler). In 1811 Ofen came to Darmstadt and became a member of the court orchestra there. At the same time, Heinrich Ofen had a card factory built where game and business cards were made. In the address book of the capital and residence city of Darmstadt for the year 1819 there are entries with different occupations: in the register of residents as "chamber musician" and in the "craftsmen and artist" directory as "card maker".

Heinrich Ofen was married to Barbara Johann (1777-1818) from Nuremberg. In 1830 he died there at the age of 62. His youngest son was Franz Ofen , who worked as a musician and painter and turned to photography when he was old.

His younger brother Ernst Ofen was a bassoonist and student of Andreas Gottlob Schwarz (1743–1806), another brother Gottfried Ofen was a clarinetist and violinist. Both lived and worked in Nuremberg.
