Johann Heinrich Barth (born November 5, 1895 in Malstatt-Burbach , † June 18, 1949 in Lucerne ) was a German politician ( SPS ). He was a member of the Saarland state parliament and honorary mayor of Saarbrücken .

Life and work

Heinrich Barth, son of the blacksmith Matthias Barth, attended elementary school and then completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith in the Burbach ironworks. From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War. After the war he worked as a machinist and crane operator in his training company from 1918. In 1921 he married Elise Fixemer in Saarbrücken.

After the Second World War , from March 23, 1946 to March 24, 1948, he was in charge of the social welfare office in Saarbrücken. After his death he was buried in a grave of honor in the forest cemetery in Burbach.

From 1918 Heinrich Barth was a member and honorary functionary of the German Metalworkers' Association . A year later he joined the SPD and was a city ​​councilor in Saarbrücken from 1919 to 1935 .

After the Saar referendum in 1935, he emigrated to Saint-Dizier, France . This was followed by German expatriation and in 1937 the acquisition of French citizenship. From 1939 to 1940 he served in the French military . On April 29, 1941, he was arrested by the Gestapo . According to the prosecution, he distributed illegal publications. On March 20, 1942, the Stuttgart Higher Regional Court sentenced him to one year in prison for preparing for high treason . After his imprisonment, Barth was deported to the Dachau concentration camp on October 16, 1942 . Only a few weeks later, on November 2, 1942, Barth was transferred to the Neuengamme concentration camp, where he was liberated on May 1, 1945.

He joined the Social Democratic Party of Saarland (SPS) and became a city councilor for them on September 2, 1946 and a member of the Saarland state parliament on October 5, 1947 for an electoral term . From March 25, 1948 to April 5, 1949 he was also first alderman . On April 6, 1949, he was elected honorary mayor of Saarbrücken and was introduced to the office. He died during a business trip in Lucerne.
