Heinrich Bergmeier , also Berkmeyer (* in the 15th century in Hamburg ; † October 2, 1524 in Lübeck ) was a German clergyman and as Heinrich III. from 1511 until his death in 1524 Bishop of Ratzeburg .

Life

Heinrich Bergmeier came from a simple middle-class background and was the son of a beer merchant and innkeeper. Even as a boy he entered the service of Johann IV von Sachsen-Lauenburg as a room heater . The duke made it possible for him to study in Rostock, which he began in 1483. He then became ducal chamber clerk, soon afterwards a senior official in the ducal chancellery in Lauenburg , then secretary and finally chancellor. In 1504 he received a canon position in the Ratzeburg cathedral chapter.

In 1511 he was elected by the cathedral chapter as successor to Johannes von Parkentin ; on June 28, 1511 he was ordained bishop. This was the first election of a bishop after the cathedral chapter was converted from a Premonstratensian monastery into a regular cathedral chapter in 1504.

Bishop Heinrich's term of office was marked by the attacks of Johann IV's successor, Duke Magnus I of Saxony-Lauenburg. The dispute began with the fact that the Duke aggressively its claimed from him Rights of Einlagers (also Ablager ) in the towns of the Bishopric prevailed, according to which the dispute as Ablagerstreit became known. They increased to such bitterness that Magnus the bishop with excommunication and his country with the interdict was occupied. A comparison brokered in 1519 by the Lübeck bishop Johannes VIII Grimholt and the dukes of Mecklenburg did not last.

Heinrich had called imperial protection, but had to live with the chapter as a refugee in Bremen and Celle for years . He died in exile in the bishop's hostel in Lübeck and was buried in St. Laurentius (Schönberg) .
