Otto Kähler (born June 14, 1875 in Ottensen ; † January 26, 1955 in Itzehoe ) was a German lawyer , notary and legal historian .

Life

Otto Kähler was born as the son of Pastor Gregor Clemens Kähler in Ottensen . He attended the Christianeum in Altona and, after graduating from high school in 1893, studied law in Leipzig and Erlangen. In 1898 he received his doctorate, in 1903 he passed the assessor examination. He then took over the position of monastery syndic and clergyman of the Itzehoe monastery and at the same time became state syndic and secretary of the ongoing deputation of the Schleswig-Holstein prelates and knighthood , which had elected him to this position shortly before his exams.

From 1909 Kähler then practiced as a lawyer and notary in Kiel at the higher regional court there . He initially ran the law firm Abraham & Kähler together with Judicial Counsel Boye Johannes Abraham , which he then continued to operate under his own name after his death in 1922. On World War I after he participated as a reserve officer. Even as "a consistent opponent of the National Socialists", Kähler was able to continue his profession after 1933. After the house of his family and the office were completely destroyed in one of the air raids on Kiel in 1944, he moved to Itzehoe, where he continued to work as a lawyer at the local district and regional court into old age.

In addition to his professional work as a lawyer and notary in the narrower sense, his interest was, as it was said, "with the same intensity in life in its entirety, the economic, social, sociological and cultural processes." a. from 1920 member of the examination commission for the first, and from 1945 also for the second state legal examination. From 1910 to 1924 he was a member of the board of the Kleinbahnen Kiel-Schönberg and Kiel-Segeberg and between 1949 and 1954 on the board of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History. In addition, he published numerous articles on the history of Schleswig-Holstein in regional and legal history magazines. Two works written by him, a short outline of the history of the Schleswig-Holstein knighthood (up to 1867) and a more comprehensive history of the Schleswig-Holstein knighthood (for the period up to 1700), however, remained unpublished.

Otto Kähler is known to lawyers to this day as the author of Schleswig-Holstein state law , which appeared in two editions in 1908 and 1923. In it he documented and commented on the unmanageable number of regional and local legal provisions in Schleswig-Holstein that were still valid or continued to have an effect when the Civil Code came into force in 1900. His estate is in the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives .
