Heinrich Hamm (born May 3, 1889 in Goch , † August 24, 1968 in Trier ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Heinrich Hamm was the son of the German set designer Johann Baptiste Hamm. He was a student at the arts and crafts schools in Trier , Cologne and Düsseldorf .

After completing his military service, practical years followed at Grassegger in Cologne and in Düsseldorf studios. From 1921 he was assistant to August van der Velde (1870-1958) at the Trier School of Applied Arts , where he was a full-time lecturer from 1926 to 1938.

Works

Heinrich Hamm was an Art Nouveau sculptor. His later works make him the "German Maillol ".

He created a large number of works of art, especially for public spaces in Trier, including the Moselle sculptures, which were commissioned by the city of Trier in 1928 and placed on the Moselle in 1930 . Works in public space were also sgraffiti on the regional court and water engineering office and a portrait of Constantine on the portal of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier . He restored the Electoral Palace in Trier, the Kornmarktbrunnen and the Church of St. Irminen. He also created the risalits at the Church of St. Irminen and the sculptures in the Steipe.

A wooden crucifix is now owned by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture. In addition, Hamm created a monumental Charlemagne carved in stone for the Prüm Abbey . The city of Mehring commissioned a war memorial, for the city of Limburg he created a St. George. The St. Helena Church in Trier-Euren has a Saint Helena carved in stone by Heinrich Hamm.

Around 300 sculptures and furniture with Art Nouveau carvings by Heinrich Hamm are privately owned. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg maintains the memory of Heinrich Hamm in its archive for fine arts. The Rhenish Archive for Artists' Legacies in 2009 also accepted Heinrich Hamm as an artist. The city ​​museum Simeonstift Trier shows the bronze sculpture "Sitzender Akt" by Heinrich Hamm in its permanent exhibition.
