Heinrich Basedow came from the Lübeck branch of the Basedow family and was a son of Councilor Dietrich Basedow from his first marriage to Heleke Lüneburg . He had 21 siblings. Jordan Basedow from his father's second marriage was a canon in 1530 and a member of the 64 committee and after the Reformation a councilor. He was ennobled in 1552. Heinrich Basedow enrolled at the University of Rostock in 1484 . In 1499 Basedow was a canon in Dorpat . He was born in Rome on February 12, 1501appointed by the Pope as Bishop of Courland to succeed Michael Sculteti, who died after November 4, 1500 . On April 12, 1515 he certified a coat of arms for Heinrich Wessel (Wesseler) from the Valant court, which was based on the Basedow coat of arms. This was a unique event during the religious era.

In 1518 he chose the Dorpater cathedral chapter to succeed Bishop Christian Bornhower, who died on April 15, 1518 . However, the Pope pushed through his favorite Johann von Blankenfelde . In 1519 he is said to have come into conflict with Grand Master Albrecht of Prussia . On February 23, 1523 Basedow was mentioned for the last time in a document. As early as June 1523, the Grand Master of the Order Albrecht of Prussia suggested electing a new bishop, which suggests that Basedow had already died. In 1524 his successor Hermann Konnenberg took over the office. His grave slab is in the Johanniskirche in Hasenpoth .
