Heinrich Jürgens (born July 28, 1924 in Oeftinghausen ; † August 4, 2006 there ) was a German FDP politician. He was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament for several legislative periods and from 1974 to 1978 vice-president of the state parliament. He was also the Lower Saxony State Minister for Federal and European Affairs and from 1979 to 1984 a member of the European Parliament . He was honorary chairman of the Lower Saxony FDP and holder of the Grand Cross of the Federal Cross of Merit .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1942, Jürgens was drafted into military service. After returning from captivity in World War II , he passed the agricultural master's examination in 1954 and took over the farm, which had been in the family since the 16th century and which he managed until 1974.

Jürgens was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989 and the Lower Saxony State Medal in 1991. He was the grandson of Diederich Logemann, member of the Reichstag, and the nephew of the Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Fritz Logemann .

Jürgens first became a member of the DP in 1952 and switched to the FDP in 1959. From 1960 to 1974, Jürgens was a member of the joint municipal council of the joint municipality of Schwaförden and from 1964 to 1986 of the district council in the Diepholz district . Jürgens was 1968-1977 District Administrator of the district county Diepholz . He was a member of the state parliament in Lower Saxony from 1974 to 1978, from 1982 to 1984 and again from 1986 to 1994 . During this time he was vice-president of the state parliament from 1974 to 1978. In addition, after the CDU in Lower Saxony under Ernst Albrecht had lost an absolute majority in the state elections in 1986 and a coalition with the FDP was established, he became Minister for Federal and European Affairs until 1990.

From 1974 to 1990 he was mayor of the Schwaförden municipality. From 1978 to 1991 he was state chairman of the FDP Lower Saxony . At the federal representative assembly of the FDP on February 3, 1979 he was elected to third place on the federal list and belonged to the European Parliament from 1979 to 1984. In 1991 the state party elected him honorary chairman. From 1985 to 1990 he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom .
