Heinrich Joseph von Collin
Heinrich Joseph von Collin (born December 26, 1771 in Vienna ; † July 28, 1811 there ) was an Austrian writer .
Life
Collin is a son of the doctor Heinrich Joseph Collin (1731–1784) and his wife Elisabeth Edle von Fichtl from a family of officials who were ennobled in 1755. The poet Matthäus von Collin was his brother.
He studied law and then entered the civil service, most recently he was councilor in the state credit commission. In 1804 his drama Coriolan appeared in five acts . The premiere took place in the Burgtheater around 1802, for which Ludwig van Beethoven wrote an overture ( Coriolan overture ). It premiered on March 5, 1807. Several plays by Collin were also given at the Royal National Theater under the direction of August Wilhelm Iffland . The performance of his first work Regulus was important . Iffland played the main role of Marcus Attilius Regulus in the play, which is set in ancient Rome (premiere February 24, 1802). A lot of effort was put into the costumes for the piece, which should be as "real" as possible. To this end, Iffland worked with archaeologists like Aloys Hirt and painters like Franz Ludwig Catel . A review published in Berlin states:
“With greater splendor, with more strict observation of the costume, with more precise execution also in the secondary parts, in the movements of the extras, etc., even in the imperial city under the eyes of the poet, this play cannot be performed. All the decorations were new, as were the clothes, and one recognized in both of them the insight of one of our (the Germans) first antiquarians and art connoisseurs, who was called to help by the management. The whole arrangement of the Curia, in which the Senate gathers, was extremely impressive, the sight was great, one sensed the representatives of a great people. The same case was with the forum in the last file. "
In his plays, Collin combined the local baroque with contemporary classical music .
His brother Matthäus published Collins Collected Works in 6 volumes from 1812 to 1814. Heinrich Collin-Strasse has been named after him in Vienna's 14th district of Penzing since 1901 .
After Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had expressed himself negatively about Collins 'drama Regulus at an early stage , especially about the lack of liveliness of the characters and the static plot, he expressed the view that Collins' works would not be permanent on the stage, which is still going on with Goethe's Lifetime proved true.
He rests in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 0, Row 1, Number 3) in a grave of honor .
