Heinrich Moritz Willkomm (born June 29, 1821 in Herwigsdorf , Saxony ; † August 26, 1895 at Wartenberg Castle in Stráž pod Ralskem , Bohemia ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Willk. "

Live and act

Willkomm was born as the son of the Herwigsdorf pastor Mag. Carl Gottlob Willkomm and his wife Amalia (née Bergmann). He was the younger brother of the scholar Ernst Adolf Willkomm . Heinrich Moritz worked at the University of Leipzig , among others . He worked as a professor of natural history in Tharandt , then at the University of Dorpat and finally from 1874 to 1892 as a professor and director at the Charles University in Prague .

He wrote dozens of works in various fields of botany. His works contain many valuable lithographic images. In the 1840s he made trips to the Iberian Peninsula ; he was considered an authority on the flora of this region.

Together with Robert Hartig (1839–1901) he is considered the founder of forest phytopathology .

In 1896, Willkomm wrote Volume 1 of the work Die Vegetation der Erde by Adolf Engler and Oscar Drude on "Principles of Plant Distribution on the Iberian Peninsula".

In 1867 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Honors

In 1888 the plant genus Willkommia Hack was named in honor of Willkomm . from the sweet grass family (Poaceae). The generic name Willkommlangea Kuntze for a genus of mushrooms (Fungi) also honors him and the Danish botanist Johan Martin Christian Lange for their joint work "Prodromus florae hispanicae". The generic name Willbleibia Herter emerged from both names in 1953 as a play on words ("Will come and stay") , which was used again as an honor for Willkomm for a genus of sweet grasses (Poaceae).

During his studies Willkomm became a member of the Leipzig fraternity of Kochei in 1842 , and in 1890 an honorary boy of the Arminia fraternity in Prague .
