Heinrich Pfeiffer (Science Manager)

Heinrich Pfeiffer (born January 27, 1927 in Weinbach ; † December 22, 2016 ) was a German science manager and former Secretary General of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation .

Life

Pfeiffer was drafted towards the end of World War II and trained as a pilot. After his return from captivity, he completed a degree in education and philosophy in Mainz , Frankfurt am Main , Bonn , Stuttgart and Minneapolis (1951–52), which he completed with a doctorate in philosophy.

During his studies, Pfeiffer worked as a teacher in Wiesbaden from 1946 to 1950 . He then worked as an assistant at the University of International Educational Research in Frankfurt am Main, before accepting a position as head of the German department of the Fulbright Commission in the field of science management in 1953 . Finally, in 1956, at Werner Heisenberg's call, he moved to the office of General Secretary of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, where he was also a managing director from 1964 until his retirement in 1995.

Pfeiffer was also active in other foundations and research funding programs, including as Secretary General of the German-British Foundation in London (1974-2000), as a member of the Canon Foundation and as Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Human Frontier Science Program in Strasbourg .

In 1993 Pfeiffer was made an honorary senator of the Technical University of Munich , in 1997 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1998 he received the Leibniz Medal of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences . He is also an honorary citizen of the University of Bonn .
