Heinrich Wettig (born June 8, 1875 in Bremen , † after 1938 ) was a German painter.

Life

From around 1895 Wettig studied in the painting classes of Peter Janssen and Eduard von Gebhardt at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Since then he has been friends with Wilhelm Lehmbruck , who drew his portrait around 1906. After completing his studies, Wettig settled in Düsseldorf as a freelance painter. There is evidence that he worked there since 1904 and at least until 1924. In 1911 his address was Düsseldorf, Stockkampstr. 48 , an address in Cologne-Bickendorf in 1930 and Düren as the place of residence in 1931 . Wettig was a member of the General German Art Cooperative . There he was represented on the board of their Düsseldorf local group. With Hans Olde and Heinrich Vogeler , among others , he was also organized in the Association of Northwest German Artists . From 1904 to 1932 he was a member of the Malkasten Artists' Association in Düsseldorf.

Works

Heinrich Wettig (1913): Lower Rhine landscape with polluted pasture and farmer with his Simmental cattle

Wettig devoted himself to landscape painting , for example in the paintings Eifel landscape (1898), raging mountain stream with old watermill (1901), view of the place and Altena Castle in Westphalia (1919) and view of Nideggen Castle in the Eifel in early spring (1922) . Above all, however, he created figural compositions, increasingly with allegorical and literature-based themes, including Old Woman and Young Girl (1903, study), Dying , The Witch's Song (1905), Peace of the Night (1908), a Christ's Head (1909, probably originated in connection with the battle of Jesus and Faust's transfiguration (1910). The painting Window View (1911), exhibited at the Elberfeld Museum Association under the title Stockkämpchen , probably shows the view from the artist's studio in Pempelfort . In addition, genre scenes were created , such as the picture Blick in die Graf-Engelbert-Straße (1911), as well as still lifes and portraits, including the portrait of the sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck (1903), a self-portrait (1909), the portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II (1910) for the casino of the NCO School in Jülich , the portrait of Dr. Paul Kaufmann (1916) and the portrait of the Lord Mayor of Düren , Christian August Klotz (around 1925). Commissioned portraits such as the latter, which Wettig occasionally showed in exhibitions, were not able to inspire criticism because of their proximity to photography.
