Heinrich (Heiny) Karl Werner Peter Klemens Hubert Maria Freiherr von Droste zu Hülshoff , who should not be confused with his uncle Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff , grew up as the only son of the landowner and entrepreneur Carl Caspar von Droste zu Hülshoff (1843-1922) and his first wife Pierrine, b. Fischer (1852–1903), in Münster and from 1879 at his father's Hamborn Castle near Paderborn .

He belonged to the 22nd generation of his family, attended the Stella Matutina Jesuit boarding school in Feldkirch , completed his military service with the Hussar Regiment "Emperor Nicholas II of Russia" (1st Westphalian) No. 8, studied law and became a Prussian trainee lawyer . In 1903 he married Paula Freiin von Ketteler (1872–1936), the daughter of the politician Friedrich Clemens von Ketteler, at Eringerfeld Castle .

Heinrich managed the inherited but indebted estate from 1904 to 1912. After its sale, the couple lived in Münster with their children Maria Annunziata (1904–1977) and Mariano (1907–1997). During the First World War , Droste zu Hülshoff served as Rittmeister , where, due to his state of health and his excellent knowledge of the French language, he was deployed to monitor mail in Belgium and France . He came back from the war with a chronic illness. He lost most of his fortune due to war bonds and the German inflation from 1914 to 1923 . The couple spent the last years of their lives at Schloss Eringerfeld, which belonged to the von Ketteler family. They found their final resting place in their family cemetery in Störmede .

Public work

After returning from the First World War, Droste zu Hülshoff worked at the Münster tax office and was Vice- Consul of Switzerland due to the nationality inherited from his father .

In addition, he was active as a writer, especially on historical research, where he also published about his great aunt, the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff . He also conducted research into the genealogy of various noble families. Numerous, well-researched stories about the history of Westphalia , the local nobility and the Droste zu Hülshoff family, which were published as newspaper articles, partly under pseudonyms , originate from his pen .

Descendants

The only children from Droste zu Hülshoff were Mariano Freiherr von Droste zu Hülshoff (1907–1997) and Maria Annunziata Karoline Henrika Paula Wendelburg Godoleva Huberta Freiin von Droste zu Hülshoff (* Hamborn Castle December 21, 1904, † Regensburg March 5, 1977), who also published poems and essays in her youth. His grandchildren are Bernd and Wilderich von Droste zu Hülshoff .
