Heinrich von Glymes and Berghes (also Hendrik van Bergen and Henri de Berghes ; * July 20, 1449 ; † October 7, 1502 in Cambrai or Le Cateau-Cambrésis ) was Prince-Bishop of Cambrai and Chancellor of the Order of the Golden Fleece .

Family background

Glymes comes from the extensive noble family de Glymes . His father was Johann II von Glymes metten lippen , Lord of Bergen op Zoom . His brothers included the Imperial Chamberlain, Geheime Rat, the Lord of Bergen op Zoom, Walhain, Bierbais, Glymes, Woude, Wavre, Grimbergen etc. Johann III. von Glymes or the military and nobleman Cornelis von Glymes von Bergen . The later Archbishops of Cambrai Guillaume de Berghes and Maximilian de Berghes come from his line .

Life

Glymes became a Doctor of Laws PhD and to have had a good reputation in science. Shortly after completing his doctorate, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem . On the way back he chose the route via Rome and met Pope Innocent VIII there. He became apostolic protonotary and abbot of the Abbey of Saint-Denis in Hainaut , then coadjutor of Cambrai under his predecessor in the episcopate John VI. of Burgundy .

On June 17, 1480 Glymes was the successor to John VI. of Burgundy as Prince-Bishop of Cambrai and thus regent of the Cambrai Monastery. The episcopal ordination took place on October 1st of the same year. His term of office was marked by the fight against famine as well as by the restoration of the strong position of Cambrai. In 1493 Erasmus of Rotterdam became his secretary.

Glymes became Chancellor of the Order of the Golden Fleece on May 23, 1493 . During this time, probably in 1494, he also became the first advisor to King Philip the Fair , whom he married to Joan of Castile on October 20, 1496 in Lier .

He was buried in the Cathedral of Cambrai .
