John II of Glymes , nicknamed "metten lippen" (* October 9, 1417 ; † September 7, 1494 ) was a Dutch nobleman from the Glymes family who, among other things, carried the title of Lord of Bergen op Zoom .

Life

Van Glymes received important privileges from the dukes of Burgundy Philip and Charles for his rule in Bergen op Zoom . With this, he promoted trade in Bergen op Zoom and had several buildings renovated and rebuilt there. Examples of this are the Sint-Gertrudiskerk and the Markiezenhof , the residence of the lords and later margraves of Bergen.

Johann came to the Burgundian court of Philip the Good as a page and in 1441 became its chamberlain. He also exercised this function with Duke Karl and with Maximilian of Austria he was also his councilor. After the death of Duchess Maria , he supported Maximilian, to whom the Flemings in particular did not want to grant government power until his son Philip the Fair came of age .
Between 1450 and 1452 he traveled to the Holy Land. In 1453 he was a participant in the famous Pheasant Festival . In 1461 he was at the coronation of the French King Louis XI. present.

Other unproven information is:
In 1459 he went to the court of Pope Pius II as a diplomat to discuss the preparation for a new crusade , which did not materialize. He later served Philip the Handsome as first councilor. Maximilian of Austria visited him frequently, and the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam was also in the service of John II of Glymes. In 1472 van Glymes was appointed chief hunter of the Duchy of Brabant .
