Heinz Kuhrig (born March 4, 1929 in Strehla ; † September 13, 2001 in Berlin ) was a German politician and Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Food Management in the GDR .

Life

The son of a working-class family completed an apprenticeship as a company electrician after attending primary school from 1943 to 1945 and worked as a farm mechanic from 1945 to 1946. From 1946 he attended the workers and farmers faculty in Dresden and studied agriculture from 1947 to 1952 at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , graduating as a qualified farmer.

In 1946 Kuhrig joined the SED . From 1952 to 1961 he worked in the Agriculture Department of the Central Committee of the SED, from 1961 to 1963 director of the Institute for Agricultural Engineering of the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences (today Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering ) in Potsdam-Bornim and from 1963 to 1967 first deputy Minister of Agriculture and Member of the Agriculture Council and from 1964 to 1968 member of the Council of Ministers . After studying at the party college of the CPSU in Moscow , he became State Secretary in 1968 and, in September 1973, after the accidental death of Georg Ewald, Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Food. He held this office until November 1982. Since 1974 he was head of the East German delegation at the Permanent Commission of the RGW of Agriculture. In addition, from 1971 to 1976 Kuhrig was a member of the Central Revision Commission of the SED and from 1976 to 1989 a member of the Central Committee of the SED, as well as a member of the People's Chamber .

From December 1982 Kuhrig was General Secretary of the Central Board of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship (DSF) and from May 1983 to 1990 also Vice President of DSF.
