Helen Scott , MBE (born July 25, 1990 in Halesowen ) is a British track cyclist . She is one of the most successful pilots in paracycling in the 2010s.
Athletic career
Helen Scott started cycling at the age of ten after her parents enrolled her in the local cycling club. She herself was fascinated by track cycling thanks to the gold medals won by Chris Hoy and Kelly Holmes at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens .
In 2009 Scott became British team sprint champion together with Jessica Varnish . In 2012 she started piloting the visually impaired Aileen McGlynn at the Paralympics in London , where the duo won two medals.
In the following time Helen Scott drove as a pilot for Sophie Thornhill . At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , the two riders won two gold medals together, in the sprint and in the 1000 meter time trial . In 2015 Scott and Thornhill won gold twice in the same disciplines at the UCI Paracycling Track World Championships 2015 in Apeldoorn, and twice silver in the following year at the World Championships in Montichiari .
At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , Sophie Thornhill and Helen Scott were Paralympic winners in the 1000-meter time trial; in the one's pursuit they won bronze. In 2018 Scott and Thornhill became two-time world champions and also won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games . Together they set a new world record over 1000 meters at the Games in Australia with 1: 04.623 minutes.
Up to and including 2020, Helen Scott and Sophie Thornhill were eight times world champion in sprint and time trial. In these two disciplines, the duo also won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games .
