Helga is a female given name. It comes from the Swedish word hailac (healthy) or from helig (holy).
Minor forms are: Helgi, Hilga, Ilga ; the Russian variant is Olga , the Belarusian Wolha , the Ukrainian Olha .
The masculine forms of the name are Helgo and Helge .

The name Helga gradually became more popular in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. From the mid-twenties, Helga was among the ten most popular girls' first names. In the thirties it was even number one on the frequency statistics a few times. Its popularity began to decline gradually from the beginning of the forties and then sharply declined from the fifties. Today hardly any children are called Helga.
