The Helge is a Danish motor-driven passenger ship that has been in service since 1924.

In May 2012 it was added to the list of ships worthy of conservation ( Danish bevaringsværdigt skib ) as a ship worthy of conservation ( Danish Skibsbevaringsfonden ). The ship is in regular service between Svendborg and Valdemars Slot via Troense and Tåsinge in the Danish South Seas ( Danish: Sydfynske Øhav ).

Ferry line

The right to operate a ferry line between Svendborg, Christiansminde and Hestehaven to Troense and vice versa was based on a contract between Carl Lensbaron Iuel-Brockdorff, the owner of Stamhuset Thorseng / Taasinge , to which Valdemars Slot was a residence. Tåsinge og Sydfynske Dampskibsselskaber signed it on December 12, 1899. In this contract, the fares for adults and children as well as for single, double and discount cards as well as the number of daily trips were set.

Later put Svendborg Vindeby Færgefart and the shipping company operating the Svendborg Kommune determine the number of trips.

History of the ship

The ship was built in 1924 by J. Ring-Andersen Skibsværft in Svendborg for Sydfyenske Dampskibsselskab A / S (SFDS). The plans were drawn by the designer Johan Weber .

The hull cost 39,500 crowns and was made of wood. Frichs in Aarhus delivered the engine at a price of 19,800 crowns.

From July 1924, the ship was used all year round in ferry operations in Svendborgsund . It replaced the Hroar , which had traveled the route since 1900 when the SFDS took over the Svendborg – Christiansminde – Hestehaven – Troense route. The first captain was CA Christensen and the machinist was A. Henriksen.

In 1914 the landing stages Røgeriet ( German  smokehouse ) in Maarodde and Grasten were added to the route and when the "Eckmanns" route to Blåby and Grasten was taken over in 1938, only the Helge used the so-called "Sundfart". At peak times in summer, the "Thorseng", the "ALB", the "Agnete" and the "Sundet" sometimes helped to bring the many travelers to the various landing stages.

A permanent expedition in Troense (from February 1, 1900 to 1933 PN Pedersen) took over the post from the Helge on every trip and brought it to the local post office.

In the meantime, the Helge was used as a replacement ship with mail and travelers from Svendborg to Ærøskøbing and from Assens to Bågø when the ships regularly used there were for inspection.

During the Second World War , Christiansminde was occupied by the German military. Therefore the trips started in Vindebyøre. In October 1954 it was determined that the line could only be operated in deficit. The reason was that the residents of Grasten, Blåby and Troense preferred the public bus.

Therefore, from 1955 onwards , the Helge only ran from Whitsuntide to September.

In 1991, DSB Rederi A / S in Copenhagen (Scandlines Sydfynske) took over the ferry route and the ship on July 21. Since the mid-1980s, the ship has only carried tourists.

The Helge and the ferry route have been owned by the city of Svendborg since December 30, 2005.

Current route

The route of the ship leads from the harbor in Svendborg to Vindebyøre on the island of Tåsinge, then back to Funen to the Christiansminde pier on the eastern outskirts of Svendborg. From here the journey goes south through the Thurø Sound to Troense. On a side trip east towards Thurø is Grasten started. The last stop is at Valdemars Slot on Tåsinge, from there the ship takes the same route back to Svendborg. The travel time for the entire tour is 110 minutes.
