Jonas Hellborg
Jonas Hellborg (born June 7, 1958 in Gothenburg ) is a Swedish jazz bassist.
Career
Hellborg learned to play the bass as a child and began training in classical and jazz music at the age of sixteen. In 1981 he was invited to the Montreux Jazz Festival , where he became aware of Michael Brecker , who brought him to New York City . There he met the percussionist Reebop Kwaku Baah , with whom he worked on the album "Melodies in a Jungle Man's Head", which was released in 1983, until his death in London .
In 1982 Hellborg founded his own record label Day Eight , where he released his first solo album in 1983, "The Bassic Thing". With Michael J. Smith and Michael Shrieve the album "All Our Steps" was released. During this time he began working with John McLaughlin , who invited him to join his Mahavishnu Orchestra . After two world tours with the orchestra, he began performing in 1985 in a duet with McLaughlin. He also recorded the album "Axis" with Bernie Worrell , Bernard Fowler and Anton Fier . In 1986 another tour followed and the album "Adventures in Radioland" with the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
In the same year he recorded the album “Bass” with Worrell and Ginger Baker and the CD “Kollektiv” with Jochen Schrumpf , Thomas Bettermann , Waldo Karpenkiel and Klaus Dapper . In 1988 he went on a US tour with McLaughlin and Trilok Gurtu and recorded the album "Adfa" with Gurtu and Ulf Wakenius .
With Aydın Esen and Kenwood Dennard he founded the Jonas Hellborg Group , which later appeared in the line-up with Anders Nord and Jaime Salazar and finally with Jens Johansson and Anders Johansson . The album "E" was released with this line-up.
In 1990 he started working with Bill Laswell , with whom he founded the Greenpoint Recording Studio in New York. Laswell produced Hellborg's album "The Word" with Tony Williams and a string quartet on which Hellborg first played the acoustic bass guitar developed by Abraham Wechter . Hellborg played his solo album "The Silent Life" on the same instrument. After a European tour in 1992 and a stay in Paris in 1993, he went on a tour of China in 1995 , in addition to which several albums such as B. "Octave of the Holy Innocents" with Buckethead and Michael Shrieve .
From 1996 to 1999 he recorded the albums "Temporal Analogues of Paradise", "Time is the Enemy" and "Zenhouse" with Shawn Lane and Jeff Sipe . The live album "Aram of the Two Rivers" was created on a Syria tour with Arab musicians in Damascus and Aleppo .
In 2000 he toured with Lane and V. Selvaganesh and recorded the album "Good People in Times of Evil" with them. In 2003 the album "Icon" with Shawn Lane, V. Umamahesh , V. Umashankar and V. Slevaganesh was released, in 2004 the albums "Temporal Analogues of Paradies" and "Octaves of the Holy Innocents" as well as the DVD "Paris". Together with Sultan Khan and Fazal Qureshi , he published "World Music Friends Across Boundaries" in 2005.
In 2006 there was a new edition of the Hellborg Group. Included are Mattias Eklundh and Zoltan Csörsz Jr.
In 2011, after many years, he went on tour again with Cream drummer Ginger Baker.
