Hellmut Puschmann

Hellmut Puschmann (born July 22, 1938 in Dresden ) is a German Roman Catholic clergyman. From 1991 to 2003 he was President of the German Caritas Association .

Life

Puschmann attended elementary and high school in Dresden until he graduated from high school in 1956. From 1957 to 1962 he studied theology in Erfurt and then attended the pastoral seminar in Neuzelle . On 28 June 1964 he received in Bautzen the priesthood . From 1964 to 1967 he worked as a chaplain in Karl-Marx-Stadt in a workers' parish, then until 1971 in the Leipzig Provost Church .

In 1968 Puschmann was elected to the Diocesan Charity Council. In the autumn of 1971 he was offered to work in the central office in Berlin of the German Caritas Association in the field of further training and teacher training, which also brought him together with Caritas employees from the Federal Republic . In 1972 Puschmann took over the management of the Dresden diocesan charity, which he held for ten years. In the summer of 1982 the Berlin Bishops 'Conference appointed him after his election by the Caritas directors as chairman of the directors ' conference in the GDR and at the same time as head of the central office in Berlin of the German Caritas Association. In addition to coordination tasks, he was also responsible for contact between the Caritas offices in both parts of Germany. The management of the episcopal work " Not in der Welt " as well as the responsibility for the special building program of the Catholic Church in the GDR had been with Puschmann since 1982. After the reunification of Germany, he made a special contribution to the restructuring of Caritas, the development and expansion of social institutions and the establishment of courses of study and training for social professions in East Germany. In 1991 he was elected to succeed Georg Hüssler at the head of the Catholic welfare association, the German Caritas Association, an office that he held until 2003. This made him the first head of a large all-German organization that came from the former GDR. It was the driving force behind the discussion about a Caritas mission statement and the Caritas poverty survey in Germany. Since 1991 Puschmann has been a member of the board of the Federal Association of Independent Welfare Care (BAGFW), of which he was President in 1994 and 1999. In November 1999 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class , for his services .

On November 15, 2003, Bishop Joachim Reinelt Puschmann appointed chairman of the Caritas Association for the Dresden-Meißen diocese. Puschmann was also chairman of the board of directors and the board of trustees of the "Solidarity Action of German Catholics with the People in Central and Eastern Europe", Renovabis, launched in March 1993 .
