Helmut Flohr (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helmut Flohr (born February 14, 1932 in Hanover ) is a German architect , local politician , regional historian and book author with a focus on the Laatzener district of Grasdorf .

Life

Helmut Flohr is the descendant of a Kötner and Brinksitzer family that has been known in Grasdorf for centuries . His ancestors on his father's side were master carpenters and builders who helped shape the historic townscape.

Born towards the end of the Weimar Republic , Helmut Flohr - after graduating from the Tellkampf School in Hanover - first completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in the early post-war period before studying architecture with Dieter Oesterlen at the Holzminden University of Applied Sciences and at the Technical University of Braunschweig . He then ran his own architecture office for more than four decades from 1958 to 1999. At times parallel to this, he ran a construction business from 1960 to 1987.

From 1961 Flohr dealt with local local politics and was an advisory member of the building committee of the then still independent community of Grasdorf until 1964. In 1963 he was appointed local planner for community planning in Laatzen-Grasdorf. After all, he worked for around 30 years in local politics: From 1981 to 2006 Flohr, a member of the CDU , was a councilor for the city of Laatzen. In addition, he was an elected member of the Laatzen local council from 1976 to 1996, and from 1991 to 1994 he was the mayor of Laatzen, Laatzen-Mitte and Grasdorf. In addition to his involvement in various committees, he focused on the subject areas of schools, the environment and urban development. He chaired the school committee for five years and chaired the " aquaLaatzium " project committee for two years .

The square at the corner of
Am Thie and Kirchstrasse with its fountain was initiated by Helmut Flohr and designed in 1987 based on his designs.

Especially since the old Halbmeierhof Kook had been demolished and row houses built in its place, Flohr has been committed to the historic building structure of Grasdorf and finally to the preservation and design statutes of the place, which prevented the old village structure from disappearing completely. The redesign of the Am Thie square with its fountain, which was ceremoniously opened in 1987 on the initiative and based on designs by Flohr, including the fountain , stood in this spirit . On that day, the qualified architect also established the tradition of the Grasdorf fountain festivals that has been cultivated since then . Three decades later, after collecting donations on the occasion of his 85th birthday, Flohr donated a plaque with information on the importance of the Thie and the history of the place on site, which was traditionally the "secular center of the village". In addition to the information given on the board, the Grasdorfer published a self-financed, free flyer in a first edition of 500 copies, which is intended to invite you to take a tour and to provide information on more than 20 different stations during a "village walk".

Helmut Flohr achieved particular merits in archeology when he uncovered the foundations of medieval Retburg in 1973 on what is now the water extraction site.

Parallel to his other activities, Flohr was a volunteer officer for archaeological monument preservation in the former district of Hanover from 1981 to 1989 . In addition, he was a member of the Laatzen-Pattensen Church District Assembly for 18 years.

Flohr wrote numerous publications on the history of Laatzen and its district of Grasdorf . In doing so, he succeeded in conveying a vivid and understandable local history, which the author also passed on during regularly organized historical guided tours. The Grasdorf an der Leine Foundation has recorded many of Flohr's publications .

In 2018, the homeland researcher was honored for his documentation of the history of the Grasdorf senior care home Leinetal on Rethener Kirchweg , where " a mansion with a castle and castle park " previously stood. The publication of the documentation as a brochure was announced at the celebrations.

Helmut Flohr is a father of four.
