Helmut Lehmann (born December 1, 1882 in Berlin ; † February 9, 1959 there ) was a German politician ( SPD / SED ).

Life

Lehmann became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1903. From 1914 to 1933 he was the executive chairman of the Main Association of German Health Insurance Funds . During the Nazi dictatorship in Germany, Lehmann was imprisoned several times. In 1945 he was a member of the central committee of the SPD in Berlin. In the state elections in 1946 he was elected to the Thuringian state parliament for the SED . From 1949 to 1950 he was a member of the Politburo of the party executive committee of the SED , from 1950 to 1959 he was head of the GDR social security system .

Helmut Lehmann was awarded the Karl Marx Order in 1953 , and in 1957 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in gold. After his death he was buried in the memorial of the socialists in the central cemetery Friedrichsfelde in Berlin-Lichtenberg . Various institutions in the GDR bore his name, such as an FDGB holiday home in Johanngeorgenstadt . In 1982, the GDR's Deutsche Post issued a special postage stamp in his honor .
