Walter Buchheim (born January 28, 1904 in Pegau ; † November 1, 1979 ) was a German politician , trade unionist and chairman of the People's Solidarity .

Life

Buchheim was born the son of a shoemaker . After attending primary school in Cöllnitz and Groitzsch , he did an apprenticeship as a metal grinder from 1918 to 1922 , and worked in this profession until 1929. From 1929 to 1931 Buchheim was a miner in the lignite mining industry.

In 1923 Buchheim joined the KJVD , for which he fulfilled functions at the regional level. In 1926 he became a member of the KPD . From 1931 to 1933 he was a city councilor in Groitzsch and a full-time city councilor.

After the NSDAP came to power , Buchheim took part in the resistance against National Socialism . He was arrested several times: from August to November 1933 imprisonment, 1934–1936 and from August to October 1944 Sachsenhausen concentration camp . After his release from the concentration camp, he worked again as a metal grinder until 1945.

From 1945 to 1949 Buchheim was a city councilor of the KPD and SED and from August 1945 to 1949 mayor of Groitzsch. In 1949 he attended the German Administration Academy in Forst Zinna and in 1950/1951 was district administrator in the district of Zittau . After attending the SED state party school in Meißen (1951/1952), he was first secretary of the SED district leadership in Chemnitz and Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1952 to 1959 and a member of the district assembly there from 1952 to 1958 .

From 1954 to 1963 Buchheim was a member of the Central Committee of the SED and from 1958 to 1963 a member of the People's Chamber .

From 1959 to 1961 - as successor to Otto Lehmann - deputy chairman of the federal executive committee of the FDGB , from 1961 to 1971 chairman of the central committee of people's solidarity . From 1969 to 1971 he was a member of the Presidium of the National Council of the National Front of the GDR .

In 1971 Buchheim retired. He died in 1979. His urn was in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the Memorial of the Socialists in the Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.
