Helmut Lipfert (economist)

Helmut Lipfert (born May 5, 1924 in Braunschweig ; † September 27, 2008 in Hamburg ) was a German economist .

Life

Lipfert studied at the Faculty of Political Science and Law at Philipps University in Marburg . On May 5, 1953, with a thesis on cooperation and performance competition in the company, he became a Dr. rer. pole. PhD . He then worked in the banking industry, from 1955 as assistant to the board, from 1955 to 1958 as an authorized signatory and member of the management.

From 1956 to 1958 he was a lecturer at the Technical University of Darmstadt (TH Darmstadt). Lipfert completed his habilitation in 1958; his habilitation thesis bears the title foreign exchange trading and foreign exchange transactions of banks, exporters and importers . From 1959 to 1962 he worked as a lecturer at the University of Frankfurt / Main, and in 1959/60 he took over a professorship at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . In 1960 he was appointed full professor of business administration at the TH Darmstadt . In 1962 he was appointed professor for general business administration at the University of Hamburg ; The focus of his teaching activities was banking and insurance operations. At the same time, he also headed the Institute for Money and Capital Transactions at the University of Hamburg.

In 1966 he moved to the board of the "Rheinische Girozentrale und Provinzialbank", Düsseldorf , which merged on January 1, 1969 with the "Landesbank für Westfalen Girozentrale", Münster , to become the Westdeutsche Landesbank . For a number of years he also held the office of Vice President of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Börse in Düsseldorf. In connection with the bankruptcy of the Herstatt Bank and the subsequent turbulence at WestLB, which acted as security provider for its majority shareholder Hans Gerling , he was only 49 years old as the board member responsible for international business, following the intervention of the then WestLB board chairman Ludwig Poullain retired in July 1974.

From 1975 to 1976 he was a full professor of finance at the Institut européen d'administration des affaires (INSEAD) in Fontainebleau . From 1976 to 1982 he was also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at INSEAD.

In 1976 he took over the chair for general business administration and cooperatives at the University of Hamburg, later the chair for international management as special business administration that he founded . At the same time, he was the managing director of the Institute for Cooperatives and, for an electoral term, spokesman for the Department of Economics.

Lipfert was a member of the stock exchange expert commission at the Federal Ministry of Finance and on the board of the German Association for Protection of Securities and Chairman of the board of the European Association for Economic and Social Development and the supervisory board of Tchibo Frisch-Röst-Kaffee AG in Hamburg.
