Hendrik Liersch (2008)

Hendrik Liersch (born April 11, 1962 in Berlin ) is a German publisher and author. As a book artist he is known for bibliophile press prints. The publishing house Corvinus Presse , which he founded in 1990, was awarded the Victor Otto Stomps Prize in 2009.

Life

Hendrik Liersch has two sisters; his mother was a teacher and his father the writer and literary scholar Werner Liersch (1932-2014).

Liersch took part in numerous summer camps of the Action Reconciliation Service for Peace and in 1982 received administrative penal proceedings for “deliberately disturbing the socialist public order”. After graduating from school, he joined the army as a construction soldier (1987/88 in Prora on Rügen), which is why he had to forego studying later.

He did an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker and then worked, among other things, as a night watch in the children's home of the Stephanus Foundation on the White Lake and as a carpenter, photo laboratory technician and precision mechanic.

In 1990 he founded the Corvinus Press and has been producing artist books ever since.

Since 1978 he has been collecting everything about VO Stomps and its raven press. Both his collection and his publisher's bibliophile books have been exhibited in prestigious locations.

Liersch participated in numerous international mail art projects , such as the BrechtPOSTille , as well as in artist magazines and anthologies.

Hendrik Liersch is married to Karen Quast for the second time and lives in Berlin.

Publisher succeeding VO Stomps

Liersch has dealt intensively with the life and work of the publisher and writer Victor Otto Stomps, the founder of the legendary Rabenpresse , and sees the publishing house, which he named Corvinus Presse , in the tradition of this publishing house founded in 1926.

Just like stomps, the books dr Corvinus Presse show great craftsmanship. Most of the books are made by himself in the original manual type setting of manual lead typesetting and also hand-bound - mostly with Japanese lace binding - whereby Liersch almost always compiles each book as an artist's book together with graphic artists and draftsmen in a different bibliophile process . He worked with well-known authors (for example Hans Bender and Guntram Vesper ) and artists (including Horst Hussel and Aldona Gustas ).

What drives the publisher is the pleasure of a well-made book. He takes care of texts that need commitment - and are also worthwhile to him . Paper, typesetting and form are different for every book. His primary concern is to do justice to the texts. That is why there are no fixed formats in the Corvinus Press, even within its ranks. An individual solution should be found for each book. In the case of Edgar Allan Poe's Raben , for example, it was important to Liersch not to have to break the long lines of poetry, as was done in the paperback edition of the text.

Corvinus Press books have been acquired by numerous domestic and foreign libraries, for example in Germany in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library , in the USA in Princeton University and in England in the Cambridge University Library .

Cornelia Staudacher noted in the Tagesspiegel as his publisher characteristics the passion of the tracker, a predilection for those not yet established or forgotten, a weakness for the extraordinary and the odd and of course the courage to take risks . In 2007 he wrote the fundamental work The Almost Complete History of the Raven Press on Victor Otto Stomps and put together numerous exhibitions on Stomps and his bibliophile books.
